Curriculum
Highlights
Academic areas for First Grade include, but are not limited to, reading, math, spelling, grammar/language arts, writing, handwriting, science, and social studies.
- A strong focus on reading and development of basic math skills
- Differentiated learning opportunities, especially on the computer
- Daily experiences on both Macintosh and PC computers, including development of keyboarding skills
- Opportunities to work individually, with a partner, in small groups, in large groups, and in cooperative learning groups
- Weekly participation in Art, Music, Physical Education, Library and Choir
- Hands-on experiences in all curricular areas
- Integration of Spanish in calendar and some computer activities

Special activities for First Grade include the following:
- Integrated use of the Smartboard
- Traditional First Grade Nativity Play
- Publishing of individual student authored books
- Field trips
- Special units on pumpkins, Native Americans with a multi-class Thanksgiving Celebration which involves making homemade pumpkin ice cream
