Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe that school is back in session. I am very excited about beginning this year. We are gearing up for a great year.
As part of our social studies curriculum this year we will be highlighting the four parts of the Social Sciences: history, geography, economics, and civics. An important part of learning new ideas and concepts is to make it personal. I want the students to understand that they are a living part of history. We are going to create a museum that highlights our future leaders.
On August 28th from 6-7 P.M., our classroom will be turned into a museum displaying important artifacts in each child’s life. Students and their families can view the museum exhibits and learn a little more about the children’s lives from the perspective of a historian, geographer, economist, and political scientist. Most of the work will be done at school, but your help will be appreciated in collecting facts and artifacts that will be used as part of the exhibits. Following is a description of each part of the museum display that will require “at-home” help.
Timeline: Each student will create a timeline of 5-6 important events in his/her life. Students may need help brainstorming the events. We will write and illustrate the timeline at school using Kidspiration.
Four Photographs: Students will select four photographs that reflect important information about them. Examples might include a picture of their family, a pet, their house, playing a sport, a favorite park or vacation spot, etc.
Four Artifacts: Artifacts are things that social scientists can look at to learn about a person. Students have already brainstormed ideas about artifacts they would like to include in a museum exhibit about themselves. Children can choose four items that will be displayed on or in front of their board. Examples of artifacts include favorite toys, a trophy, empty boxes from a favorite food, baby blanket, dance shoes, a school project completed in another grade.
One artifact should come from each of the following time periods.
· Baby/toddler years (Ages 0-2)
· Preschool Period (Ages 3-4)
· Early childhood (Ages 5-7)
· Present (Ages 8-
In class, students will write about each of these artifacts, telling why it is a significant representation of them. Please do not send in anything valuable.
Below is a copy of the project timeline already given to the students.
